Hostile on Healthcare. Trump-pawn. Special Interest Politics. That’s Ron DeSantis' Record.
Ron DeSantis is marching in lockstep with President Donald Trump and his agenda that hurts everyday people. In Congress, DeSantis voted with Trump 94% of the time — even when it would protect health insurance companies, big polluters, and the gun lobby at the expense of Floridians.
DeSantis on Healthcare
Ron DeSantis has the wrong priorities for Florida families and has spent the last six years in Congress attacking their healthcare. His extreme agenda is wrong for Florida and will leave our children, families, and seniors behind.
He does not believe that healthcare is a right, and DeSantis openly opposed the Affordable Care Act. At a time when Floridians are paying too much for health insurance, hundreds of thousands are stuck in the healthcare coverage gap, prescription drug prices are increasing, and Medicare for seniors and protections for people with pre-existing conditions are under constant attack — electing Ron DeSantis is truly a matter of life and death for too many Floridians.
Pre-Existing Conditions & Affordable Healthcare
In Florida, 7.8 million people have pre-existing conditions — yet Ron DeSantis wants to repeal all of the ACA. He voted for Trumpcare…but not before demanding an amendment that would have hurt Americans with pre-existing conditions. DeSantis joined with the far-right Freedom Caucus in pushing for changes to allow insurers to charge more to people with pre-existing conditions. He opposes essential health benefits, saying they “corrode” the “prerequisite for liberty.”
Medicaid Expansion in Florida
As Governor, Ron DeSantis will deny Medicaid coverage to 800,000 Floridians. With the third-highest uninsured rate of any state, one in five Floridians lack healthcare. Under Medicaid expansion, 800,000 Floridians would be able to access care. However, DeSantis doesn’t think insurance matters and believes “there’s really no discernable difference” between having Medicaid and being uninsured.
DeSantis: Rewarding Washington, not Florida
Ron DeSantis prioritizes Donald Trump and corporate special interests over everyday Floridians. He claims to care about working Floridians, yet DeSantis voted for the GOP’s tax scam that raised the deficit by over $2 trillion. While billions in giveaways go to corporations, Florida families lose on the issues that matter most.
DeSantis on Education:
Ron DeSantis stands with Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos and plans that further privatize public education and divert millions from Florida’s public schools. In Congress, DeSantis voted to raise student loan interest rates up to 8.5 percent and block the Student Loan Relief Act, which would have extended a reduced interest rate for Federal Direct Stafford Loans.
DeSantis voted to cut Pell grants and for a $1 billion cut to school funding. Florida spends less on education now than we did a decade ago — and that won’t change if DeSantis is elected Governor.
DeSantis on Environment:
Ron DeSantis refuses to take steps to combat the harmful effects of climate change on our environment, arguing that it’s not a problem state government can help solve. National environmental groups have ranked his record among the worst in the nation. In Congress, DeSantis voted to cut funding for renewable energy programs, and he voted against protecting Florida’s coast from offshore drilling.
DeSantis on Guns:
Ron DeSantis has taken tens of thousands from the gun lobby, is endorsed by the NRA and believes that people should be able to carry guns openly. In Congress, DeSantis cosponsored numerous NRA-backed bills including one which successfully eliminated some background checks for mental health issues.
DeSantis has yet to visit Parkland or meet with the March for Our Lives Movement. He even opposed the bare minimum gun safety standards passed after the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting — but supports arming teachers.
